When you’re preparing for a portable piping project, you might be wondering if you need ‘A’ type pipe fittings or ‘B’ type pipe fittings. Both types of fittings serve the same purpose — to securely connect two pieces of pipe or hose — but they have significant differences in their design and functionality.
What’s the Difference Between A-Type and B-Type Pipe Fittings?
It’s easy to tell the difference between A-type and B-type pipe fittings once you know what defining characteristics to look for:
A-Type Pipe Fittings
A-type fittings have levers welded directly to the socket (or female) end of the connector. To create the connection, a separate “floating” ring is slipped over the ball (male) end.
B-Type Pipe Fittings
On ‘B’ type fittings, the levers are welded onto the separate ring, which is slipped over the ball end of the fitting. This attaches to the socket side to pull the two ends together for a tight connection.
Genuine Bauer: The Original B-Type Fitting
All ‘B’ type fittings are based on the industry’s best fitting — the Genuine Bauer Quick Coupler. However, none of the generic brands quite match the quality and reliability of the original.
So, what makes Genuine Bauer fittings so special? Look for these details:
- Only Genuine Bauer fittings have welded-on straps that hold the lever arms to the ring. This provides a secure, reliable connection.
- Genuine Bauer quick couplers have a welded hinge pin design with a signature square “bullnose”, which keeps the lever securely closed. On the other hand, Generic B-type fittings use rivets to hold the lever arms onto the ring and require a locking pin to stay closed. With these generic fittings, the lever connection can wear down over time and require replacement.
- Still not sure? Look for “BAUER” stamped on the lever! This is a sure sign that you have an authentic Genuine Bauer fitting.
